Decibel Performing Arts Showcase 2011

Harriet has been invited to attend Decibel 2011 performance showcase supported by World Arts Platform, W.A.P

During the week, which begins with the Creative Case Symposium, you will be treated to some of the most exciting new work that our country has to offer, alongside a packed programme of networking opportunities and discussions.

Over the four days of Showcase you’ll see presentations by 50 artists and companies addressing issues from the public (the Olympics, the NHS, global culture) to the personal (love, identity, mental health and disability). Many
employ innovative digital approaches to provide modern twists on age-old theatre, puppetry, dance, music and spoken word.

Showcase is not just about the shows though – it is a vibrant forum to meet imaginative and talented artists and arts professionals. We are delighted to welcome delegates from China, USA, New Zealand, Australia, Mauritius and India, bringing their unique international perspectives, and we’ve curated an exciting programme of events for you to get to know each other better.

Market place returns, with the opportunity for you to meet and talk with a wider range of artists and companies in the sector, as do the popular morning meetings. For the fi rst time these are complemented by series of inspiring decibel Talks, panel discussions on themes arising from The Creative Case and daily Kaffe klatsch critical sessions. For national portfolio organisations attending, there will be a Q&A session on Arts Council England’s new touring policy and the British Council will be on hand to provide advice about working internationally.

Digital futures in Dance - duality

Music devised by Richard Leonard with 2D Digital aspects by Sammi Fang
For more information: www.digitalfuturesindance.org.uk

Interactive technology has rapidly become part of our daily life – from watching TV online to using GPS navigation on one’s mobile phone, and it is no different in the arena of dance.

Digital Futures in Dance is a brand new conference giving artists, promoters, producers, venues, academics, creative and digital companies the opportunity to come together to discuss future possibilities for dance and technology. With an increasing growth in interdisciplinary practice, Digital Futures in Dance investigates how new digital technologies create new conditions for choreographing, presenting and experiencing dance.

Digital Futures in Dance brings together some of the leading thinkers and creators in dance and media technology. They include BAFTA award-winning media producer Anthony Lilley (CEO of Magic Lantern) , award-winning German dance company Silke Z./resistdance, “Contemporary Dance’s renaissance man” (New York Times) Jonah Bokaer (US), groundbreaking artists’ collective BADco (official selection 54th Venice Biennale 2011), the inventor of influential choreographic software ISADORA Mark Coniglio, founder of dance-tech.net and dance-tech.tv Marlon Barrios Solanes (Venezuela, New York, Geneva) as well as major UK talent Matthias Sperling (Siobhan Davies Dance, Wayne McGregor / Random Dance) and master of 3D installations Billy Cowie.

The conference programme offers examples of gaming technologies, infra-red motion capture, animation, immersive environments, interactive scenographies, online and screen based platforms, social networking technologies and thought-driven reality simulation. Through presentations, interactive workshops, performances and installations, the conference will explore the fluidity between forms and new digital technologies and how the mixing of the latest software can transform the way how audiences and artists will experience dance in the future.

'Eckhard Thiemann, conference programme director, says'

“Through the combined expertise and partnership of three leading dance organisations (Dance South West, South East Dance and DanceDigital) and Bournemouth University we have been able to bring together a fantastically rich and inspiring conference programme. This is an opportunity to listen to the latest developments, watch performances and installations, learn new skills in practical workshops and to network. We structured the conference around three broad themes: The Expanded Stage, Body & Data, and Social Interaction, capturing the different dimensions where dance and technology meet for audiences and artists.”

Digital Futures in Dance hosts over 20 international speakers and artists from Israel, Croatia, US, Germany, the UK and (via Skype) India. It includes six live performances and a range of installations and media works.

Digital Futures in Dance is a national conference organized by South East Dance, Dance Digital, Dance South West, Pavilion Dance and Bournemouth University – School of Media. The conference is at Pavilion Dance in Bournemouth.

Since its first beginnings in 1996, MASDANZA has consolidated itself year after year, going from a small regional festival, to national by the second, and then on to international from its sixth edition until now, spreading beyond our national borders and open to the participation of international choreographers and dancers.

Dance at Edinburgh 2009
Saturday, 01 August 2009 00:00 | Written by Zoë Anderson

A voiceover expresses surprise that she’s sticking to pure contemporary dance. Against these spoken assumptions, Macauley goes on dancing, edging along a line of pink feathers. Her political point is simply made; her dancing is sumptuous. Macauley can unfold a high extension with lavish ease, then arch into a backbend without changing gears. The flow of movement is as complete and satisfying as that of a cat stretching itself in the sun.

Harriet receives Bonnie Bird Award

The Bonnie Bird Choreography Fund was established in 1985 to support emerging choreographers. Each year the fund offers up to 6 different awards across 3 categories.

The awards are aimed at supporting and nurturing developing choreographers / writers by offering small grants to ease pressures and constraints by choreographers / writers seeking to develop their skills. In this respect, the BBCF occupies a unique position in dance funding by not requiring the production of a specific new piece, but supporting the winners in their current practice and research.
